Nutrition<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"93\" data-end=\"379\">Declared in 1974 by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the best food of the future, spirulina continues to amaze researchers. Its nutritional value, health benefits, and ability to grow in environments as varied and extreme as outer space have made it a subject of great interest.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"381\" data-end=\"592\"><strong>Did you know that this microalga is used by NASA and the European Space Agency astronauts to improve their nutritional intake? Research is even being conducted to evaluate its production aboard space shuttles.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"594\" data-end=\"832\">Collected and consumed for hundreds of years, spirulina was eaten by the Aztecs, Mayans, and various African populations for many reasons. Not only does it help prevent famine, but it can also improve our health when consumed regularly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"834\" data-end=\"1081\">Research began as early as the 1960s, and scientists quickly discovered that spirulina is one of the most concentrated and complete foods known. This superfood is rich in proteins, vitamins, minerals, polysaccharides, and polyunsaturated lipids.<\/p>\n<h2>The Nutritional Value of Spirulina<\/h2>\n<h3>Protein Content<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1132\" data-end=\"1358\">Over 60\u201370% of spirulina\u2019s weight is made up of complete proteins, meaning it contains all essential amino acids. These proteins are easy to digest and absorb since spirulina lacks cellulose cell walls.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1360\" data-end=\"1480\">To put it in perspective, spirulina contains <strong data-start=\"1405\" data-end=\"1443\">three times more protein than beef<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1448\" data-end=\"1477\">four times more than tofu<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<h3>Rich in Vitamins<\/h3>\n<p>Spirulina is an excellent source of vitamins such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1568\" data-end=\"1595\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Beta-carotene (vitamin A)<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1568\" data-end=\"1595\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">B-complex vitamins, including thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), and folic acid (B9)<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1568\" data-end=\"1595\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Vitamin B12<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1568\" data-end=\"1595\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Vitamin C<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1568\" data-end=\"1595\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Vitamin E<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1568\" data-end=\"1595\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Vitamin K<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1771\" data-end=\"1876\">To illustrate its nutritional superiority, spirulina contains <strong data-start=\"1833\" data-end=\"1873\">15 times more vitamin A than carrots<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<h3>Minerals<\/h3>\n<p>Similarly, this remarkable microalga is rich in essential minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, selenium, sodium, boron, iodine, and zinc.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2068\" data-end=\"2210\">Spirulina contains <strong data-start=\"2087\" data-end=\"2119\">13 times more iron than beef<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2124\" data-end=\"2154\">12 times more than spinach<\/strong>! As for calcium, it contains <strong data-start=\"2184\" data-end=\"2207\">180% more than milk<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<h3>Polysaccharides<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2217\" data-end=\"2449\">Spirulina is rich in polysaccharides\u2014around 50 different ones, each with unique biological activities. Their health benefits are numerous, and several studies are ongoing to better understand their functions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2451\" data-end=\"2667\">So far, research has shown fascinating biological effects, including anticancer, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, antithrombotic, antiviral, and even gut microbiota-regulating properties.<\/p>\n<h3>Phycocyanin<\/h3>\n<p>Containing phycocyanin, the blue pigment responsible for its color, spirulina has <strong data-start=\"2774\" data-end=\"2829\">antioxidant effects 20 times greater than vitamin C<\/strong>. Studies show this blue protein pigment also has pain-relieving and neuroprotective properties.<\/p>\n<h3>Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA)<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2934\" data-end=\"3105\">Spirulina contains between <strong data-start=\"2994\" data-end=\"3029\">2\u20134% gamma-linolenic acid (GLA)<\/strong>, a polyunsaturated fatty acid known for supporting cardiovascular health.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3107\" data-end=\"3334\">GLA has been shown to lower blood lipid levels, regulate blood pressure, and\u2014thanks to its antioxidant properties\u2014help prevent cancer. Its anti-inflammatory effects may also help reduce eczema, atherosclerosis, and arthritis.<\/p>\n<h2>Variable Nutritional Values<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3380\" data-end=\"3645\">Despite spirulina\u2019s exceptional qualities, studies have found that its nutritional content can vary widely. A comparative study of spirulina products on the market revealed major differences not only between brands but even between batches from the same producer.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3647\" data-end=\"3754\">Several factors affect spirulina\u2019s growth, particularly for products cultivated in open-air environments.<\/p>\n<h3>Factors Influencing Spirulina Quality<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3810\" data-end=\"4003\">Since several cultivation techniques exist, research recommends growing spirulina in a <strong data-start=\"3897\" data-end=\"3923\">controlled environment<\/strong>. Many parameters during cultivation can influence its nutritional properties.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4005\" data-end=\"4175\">The more controlled the conditions, the higher the quality of spirulina obtained.
