Vitamin D
Vitamin D has become very well-known and studied for its immune system strengthening effects and for bone health. It is essential in the activation of various immune responses and is integral for the health of our bones and teeth because it aids in the absorption and utilization of the bone building minerals calcium and phosphorus.
Vitamin D actually works as a hormone within the body, even though we call it a vitamin. It is fat soluble, meaning it is best absorbed with fat and is stored in the body’s fatty tissues. One of the main ways that we produce Vitamin D is through direct skin contact with the UVB rays from the sun.
Vitamin D is a very common deficiency in Canada, so common in fact that if a Doctor suspects deficiency they will just recommend taking a supplement rather than testing blood levels. This is in part due to too much time spent inside, the use of UVB blocking sun rays and cold months where our skin is covered up.
Deficiency has many potential health implications, including increased cancer risk, osteoporosis, weakened immune system, weakness and bone loss.
Vitamin K
Vitamin K is another fat-soluble vitamin and it plays a role in proper blood clotting, bone strength through activation of Osteocalcin (aids in bone and teeth calcification) and calcium absorption and blood calcium regulation helping prevent arterial calcification.
Because of these effects it has been shown to be an integral vitamin for the health of our heart and bones and to prevent severe blood loss when we encounter injury. Vitamin K is found in two forms, K1 and K2. Land Art has chosen to use Vitamin K2 in their D3+K2 supplement because it has been found to be the more absorbable form and is better utilized by the body. K2 has been found to go right to blood vessel walls, bones and tissues for utilization.
