Celebrating the Holidays with family is not always easy for vegetarians and vegans. Also, typical Quebec Holiday dishes tend to be quite meaty: turkey, meat pies, etc. However, “sharing” a meal doesn’t mean that everyone has to eat the same thing. It’s totally possible to share the joy of being together at the table, even when we have different eating habits.
Here are some top tips to spend a great Holiday season with the ones you love:
1. Communicate
Many vegetarians and vegans will think “I’ll eat the same as everyone, leaving out the animal products”, but will end up having a few olives with their drink and a bunch of grilled veggies for dinner. Give your host a quick call to learn about the menu – it only takes a few minutes, and can save you many worries. Ask questions, and don’t settle for vague answers. Many well‑intentioned people don’t know much about a plant-based diet. Therefore, it’s important to take the necessary time to make sure that the menu is really suitable to avoid feeling uncomfortable or offending your host.
2. Cook
Preparing a festive vegan meal really isn’t that hard, and it can be a great way to introduce your loved ones to a plant-based diet. Instead of bringing an individual lunch, why not prepare a vegan version of a typical Holiday dish that everyone will get a chance to taste? You could also check out the various ready‑to‑eat products and meals that are available at your local grocery store or health food store during the Holidays. Either way, don’t forget to give your host a call to mention it, but also to make sure you’ll have access to the kitchen to cook or reheat your food, if necessary.
3. Be tactful
Unfortunately, there’s always that one person who will make a comment or try to start a debate. But it’s not the time, so stay firm and don’t try to argue, explain or justify anything.
