Yes, cough syrup can be given to children from the age of 2. It is always advisable to follow the age-appropriate dosage and consult a healthcare professional if necessary.

What is slippery elm?

Slippery elm bark should have a special place in the family medicine cabinet. A large tree native to eastern North America, it is found in Quebec, in the southern and western parts of the province. Historically used by Native Americans, it is an emollient with very high nutritional value.
The bast (the tender part of the inner bark), rich in mucilage, was harvested to make a preparation that was served as food to babies, convalescents, the elderly, and anyone suffering from gastric disorders. A decoction was also made from it and applied to soothe various wounds and skin irritations. “Nothing is more emollient and better for wounds, internal or external,” wrote the Sisters of Providence in their Elementary Treatise on Materia Medica in 1890. Slippery elm is effective in cases of irritation of the bronchopulmonary system, sore throats, colds, coughs and gastrointestinal pain. Its medicinal properties are numerous: emollient, pectoral, nutritive, expectorant, cough suppressant, diuretic, mild astringent, tonic, in addition to soothing the throat and respiratory tract.
