Melatonin is the hormone known as the “sleep hormone”. It is secreted when it gets dark and sends a signal to the brain that it is time to sleep. Production decreases with age. Our formula has a pleasant vanilla taste and no sugar added. The bottle comes with a practical dropper that helps to determine the proper dosage.

  • Children and adolescents (1 to 17 years old): Consult a health care practitioner.
  • Adults (18 years and older): 1 ml per day at bedtime.

Consult a health care practitoner if you use the product for more than 4 weeks.

Contraindications

Do not operate heavy machinery for 5 hours after taking melatonin. Do not take if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Do not take if you are taking immunodepressant medication.

Precautions and warnings

Consult a health care practitioner before using if you suffer from hormonal problems, diabetes, a liver or kidney illness, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, migraines, depression or hypertension, or if you are taking medication to control high blood pressure, sedatives or hypnotics. Consult a health care practitioner if symptoms persist for more than 4 weeks (chronic insomnia).

  • Do not use if the security seal is broken.
  • Keep out of the reach of children.
  • Shake well before use.
  • Keep refrigerated after opening.

What is melatonin?

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland (epiphysis). The secretion of melatonin is inhibited in the presence of light and stimulated when it is dark. The production decreases with age. The optimal dosage is not established because it varies a lot during studies.

In Canada, two types of melatonin are used in supplements: melatonin from the pineal gland of animals or synthetic melatonin.

Melatonin as a tool that may be used to wean someone off of sleeping pills:

For weaning off of benzodiazepines for people suffering from insomnia: 2 mg of melatonin taken at bedtime for 6 weeks (the benzodiazepine is reduced by 50% during the second week, by 75% on weeks 3 and 4, is then stopped during weeks 5 and 6), and continued for up to 6 months.

Note: weaning off of a medication which causes dependency should be done with the supervision of a health practitioner.
