Magnesium & Health : The key to maintain good health

Written by Stephanie Oswald, Certified Personal Health Coach and Registered Holistic Nutritionist.

Magnesium is an essential mineral that acts as a cofactor in activating more than 300 different enzymes in the human body.

Magnesium plays a central role in our bodies. It’s necessary for cellular energy production, proper nervous system function, muscle relaxation, and building and strengthening bones and teeth. It also supports the body’s absorption of other nutrients.

This mineral helps the body transport calcium into the bones and activate vitamin D, which is essential for bone strength. Magnesium also contributes to a healthy immune system.

How much magnesium should we consume?

On a daily basis, an adult should consume about 100 mg of magnesium. This amount can be difficult to obtain through diet alone—especially because of poor dietary habits, soil depletion, and the consumption of certain products like sugar and alcohol, which can contribute to magnesium loss.

Some of the benefits of magnesium

Magnesium is extremely important for electrolyte balance, proper muscle function, and muscle relaxation.

Adding magnesium supplements to your routine can also be excellent for athletes. Studies have shown it can help improve athletic performance, reduce exercise-related muscle pain and cramps, and help maintain hydration.

If you feel anxious or stressed, magnesium may also help calm the nervous system and improve sleep. We now know that good stress management and adequate sleep are essential to overall well-being.

Taking a magnesium supplement alongside a balanced diet can help reduce stress levels and improve sleep quality. Magnesium has also been shown to support heart function, thanks to its effect on muscle health and relaxation.

Signs of magnesium deficiency

There are several possible signs of low magnesium, but here are the most common:

  • muscle pain and spasms;
  • insomnia;
  • headaches;
  • constipation;
  • low energy levels.

Of course, these symptoms can also be linked to other health issues, which is why it may be recommended to consult a healthcare professional.

Magnesium-rich foods

  • dark chocolate;
  • spinach;
  • almonds;
  • pumpkin seeds;
  • black beans;
  • avocado;
  • banana;
  • figs.

What makes Land Art magnesium different?

Land Art magnesium is offered in ionic form, for optimal absorption and use by the body.

Personally, I take Land Art’s ionic magnesium supplement in a superfruit concentrate (which is absolutely delicious) every evening before brushing my teeth. As someone who has taken magnesium supplements for a long time, I’m thrilled to notice reduced muscle pain and improved sleep quality.
